Study of the Effect of Cropping on Space

I sketched an oil lamp for a study. The intent of this exercise was to show the effect of cropping on space. The images below show sketches with the top and bottom cropped, in portrait, and landscape. I’m not sure this exercise taught me anything new about cropping. It may have been more instructive had I used a few more objects.

However, I did get much needed practice doing gestural sketches in unforgiving ink. I wish my sketches had improved. The first one is actually the closest to the real object.

I’m sure you noticed the ghost images behind the first two sketches. I scanned these out of my 5.5 x 8.5 inch sketch book. After the second scan, it occurred to me to place a white paper between the pages.
