Sketch of a Farmhouse

Eduardo Suré; Sketch of a Farmhouse, 2021; Graphite

This sketch was a study of three depths of space in a landscape. I used a farmhouse that I can see from my library because it has been too windy or rainy to sit outside with a sketchbook. The creek is in the front, the house is in the middle, and the mountains are in the back. I didn’t enjoy sketching this because I didn’t have a good solution for translating the mess of lines in the real landscape into lines for a sketch.

  1. Perhaps focus in on the house and place just one tree and a few branches in the foreground. Behind the house less detail to the horizon. In the simplified picture use tone to differentiate the planes – try using different grades of pencil for each plane. It’s difficult to get aerial perspective with a line drawing.
